What to Expect During Labor and Delivery as a Dad

Preparing for the delivery as a new dad can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re unsure where to start or feel unfamiliar with what to expect. Being there during labor and delivery is an important part of the process.

If you’re feeling nervous or unsure about what you can do, you’re not alone. Here are some simple things to remember as you prepare for the big day.

Expect the Unexpected

First, be ready for the unexpected. Labor doesn’t always follow a set timeline, and every birth experience is unique. Your partner may be in labor for hours or even longer, so patience and flexibility are key.

Your primary role during labor and delivery is to support your partner. This could mean helping her stay calm, holding her hand, or simply being present. You might be asked to help with breathing exercises, fetch ice chips, or just offer words of encouragement. Your presence can make a big difference in helping her feel supported and loved.

Don’t hesitate to ask questions. Medical staff are there to help and guide you through the process. Whether it’s understanding what’s happening during labor or knowing how to hold your baby for the first time, the staff will provide the information and assistance you need.

Simple Preparations

Preparing for labor and delivery is not just about supporting your partner emotionally—it’s also about being practically prepared. Bring comfort items like a pillow or blanket from home and cozy socks or a robe to keep your partner comfortable during labor. Include toiletries such as lip balm, hair ties, and any personal items your partner might need.

Tools like massage balls or tennis balls can provide relief for your partner during contractions, and having your partner’s birth plan or notes handy ensures clear communication with the medical team.

Snacks and drinks are essential for both of you; pack easy-to-eat options like granola bars and fruit, along with a refillable water bottle or sports drinks to stay hydrated. Keep your phone charged with a portable charger or extra cable for updates, photos, and communication. For yourself, bring a change of clothes, comfortable shoes, and a hoodie in case the room gets chilly.

Pack important documents like IDs, insurance information, and any pre-registration forms, along with baby essentials such as an outfit for the trip home and a properly installed car seat.

Being prepared helps you focus on what matters most—supporting your partner and welcoming your baby into the world. Hospitals can be long and tiring places during labor and delivery, so these simple preparations will help you be there for your partner.
