If you are considering a medical abortion for an unplanned pregnancy, understanding what the process actually involves before making any decisions is one of the most important things you can do. Many women report feeling unprepared for the physical experience, and that gap in understanding deserves to be addressed honestly.

At Women’s Resource Center of Hancock County, our team and client advocates are not afraid to have this conversation. We believe every patient deserves factual, compassionate information.

How a Medical Abortion Works

A medical abortion involves two drugs taken in sequence, not a single pill as the name sometimes implies. The FDA approves this regimen for use through 10 weeks of gestation.

Mifepristone is taken first. It works by blocking progesterone, the hormone every pregnancy depends on to continue. The FDA tightly regulates the distribution of mifepristone, requiring that it only be prescribed by certified providers.

Misoprostol is taken 24 to 48 hours later. It causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy and related tissue through cramping and vaginal bleeding, which can range from moderate to severe depending on the individual.

What the Experience Can Look Like

Not every woman’s experience looks the same. Some describe it as similar to a heavy period, while others report intense symptoms. Common side effects include:

  • Upset stomach
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever and chills
  • Headache

Because every woman responds differently, having access to medical care throughout the process matters. With serious risks such as incomplete abortion and heavy bleeding, it’s essential to have access to emergency care.
