Becoming a father can bring excitement, but it can also leave you wondering how to build a strong bond with your newborn. You may feel like your baby has a stronger connection with their mother, especially during those first few weeks, but there are many ways fathers can develop a close and meaningful relationship with their baby.

Bonding does not have to happen through one big moment. It develops through the small, everyday interactions that help your baby learn your voice, your touch, and your presence.

WRC of Hancock County is here to support you as you prepare for fatherhood. We offer resources and education for men to help you feel more prepared for life with your newborn, as well as free pregnancy tests and limited ultrasounds for your partner.

The Power of Skin-to-Skin Contact

Research has found that skin-to-skin contact between fathers and newborns can strengthen father-infant bonding. Holding your baby against your bare chest can help your baby become familiar with your touch, voice, and smell while you spend quiet time together.

Consider making skin-to-skin contact part of your routine when your baby is calm.

Get Involved in Daily Care

Changing diapers, feeding your baby, burping them, bathing them, getting them dressed, and helping them settle for sleep all give you opportunities to spend time together.

You can also help during the night and early morning with bottle feeding shifts.

These everyday tasks may seem small, but they help you learn your baby’s cues and become more comfortable caring for them. They also give your partner a chance to rest and remind them that they don’t have to carry the responsibility of caring for the baby alone.

Give Yourself Compassion

Try not to compare your bonding experience to other dads. You may not feel an immediate bond with your baby, and that’s okay. Building a connection can take time.

Give yourself grace during this period. What matters most is showing up consistently and building your relationship with your baby through everyday care and attention.

If you’re struggling emotionally during this transition, you are not alone. Seeking healthy support from a mentor, friend, therapist, or family member can help you understand your feelings and concerns.
