Finding out whether you’re pregnant can feel like a time-sensitive matter, especially when you’re eager to confirm a potential pregnancy. Understanding how pregnancy tests work and when they can provide accurate results can help ease your mind and ensure you’re testing at the right time.
When is Conception?
To start, let’s define conception. Conception occurs when a sperm fertilizes an egg, typically during ovulation, in the middle of your menstrual cycle. This fertilized egg then travels to the uterus and implants in the uterine lining, usually 6 to 12 days after ovulation. At this point, your body begins producing human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), the hormone that pregnancy tests detect.
Levels of hCG rise quickly in early pregnancy, doubling approximately every two to three days. However, the hormone may not reach detectable levels immediately after implantation, which is why timing is critical when using a pregnancy test.
Timing a Pregnancy Test
For most over-the-counter tests, the earliest accurate results can be obtained one day after your missed period. Your hCG levels are usually high enough to be identified in urine by this time. Testing earlier than this—such as within a few days of conception—may result in a false negative because hCG levels haven’t risen enough to be detected.
Some sensitive home pregnancy tests claim to detect hCG a few days before a missed period. However, these tests can be less reliable and more prone to false negatives. Wait at least a day after your missed period for the most accurate results.
In addition to a pregnancy test, an ultrasound can provide definitive confirmation by showing the location and progress of the pregnancy. This is especially important if you are unsure of your dates or experience irregular cycles.
