Children do a lot of growing without us even realizing it. A new word, a new skill, a new question, or a new way of expressing an emotion can appear almost overnight.

Being an active participant in your child’s development starts with paying attention, staying involved, and continuing to learn as your child grows.

The Women’s Resource Center of Hancock County is here to help. Through parenting education, practical resources, and one-on-one support, you can gain the knowledge and tools you need to feel more prepared for the everyday challenges of parenting.

Be Present in the Everyday Moments

Some of the most important opportunities to support your child’s development do not require expensive toys, elaborate activities, or a perfectly planned schedule.

Talking with your child, reading together, singing songs, playing, answering questions, and listening when your child wants to show you something all create opportunities for learning and connection.

These everyday interactions also help you notice what your child is interested in, what they are learning, and where they may need additional encouragement.

Research on caregiver sensitivity has found that the way parents notice and respond to their children’s cues is associated with important areas of development, including attachment, language, and cognitive skills.

Make Learning Part of Your Routine

Your child can learn through ordinary parts of the day.

You can:

  • Read a book together before bedtime.
  • Talk about what you see while taking a walk.
  • Let your child help with simple age-appropriate tasks.
  • Ask questions and give your child time to answer.
  • Play pretend games.
  • Sing songs together.
  • Encourage your child to try something new.
  • Talk about emotions and help your child put feelings into words.

These moments can support language, thinking, movement, social skills, and emotional development while also giving you more opportunities to connect with your child.

Give Yourself Permission to Keep Learning

Being an involved parent does not mean knowing everything already.

As your child grows, you will encounter new stages, new behaviors, new questions, and situations you have never handled before. Asking for advice is not a sign that you are failing. It can be one way to become a more prepared and confident parent.

The Women’s Resource Center of Hancock County offers parenting classes designed to help you build practical parenting knowledge and skills. We have more than 150 BrightCourse lessons covering a wide variety of ages, situations, and life lessons.

We also offer a points program where you can earn points by attending classes and through other approved activities. Those points can be used at the WRC Boutique, which offers essential items such as clothing, diapers, car seats, strollers, and other baby supplies.

This program is available for children aged 3½ and younger, with the exception in certain circumstances.

Having access to practical resources can take some pressure off your family and make it easier to focus on what matters most: caring for your child.

You Don’t Have to Figure Out Parenting Alone

There will be days when you feel confident in what you are doing and days when you have no idea what to do next. That is part of parenting.

WRC also offers one-on-one mentoring for women facing uncertain circumstances. Our advocates can listen to what you are experiencing, help you explore possible solutions, and connect you with tools and resources. Relationship coaching is also available for clients who want support navigating challenging relationships and building healthier ones.

You do not have to wait until a problem becomes overwhelming before asking for help.
