If you’re thinking about an abortion, you may have heard about the abortion pill. This method involves two drugs used to end a pregnancy early. It is typically available during the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. Understanding how these pills work, the science behind them, and what to expect can help you make an informed decision about your health.

How Do the Abortion Pills Work?

The abortion pill involves taking two drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol. These drugs work in different ways to end a pregnancy.

  • Mifepristone: The first drug, mifepristone, blocks the hormone progesterone. Progesterone is essential for maintaining the pregnancy, as it helps the uterine lining stay intact so the pregnancy can develop. Without this hormone, the uterine lining begins to break down, and the pregnancy cannot continue.
  • Misoprostol: The second drug, misoprostol, is taken 24 to 48 hours after mifepristone. It causes the uterus to contract, which leads to bleeding and the expulsion of pregnancy tissue. The cramps and bleeding you experience during this stage are a result of the uterus expelling the pregnancy.

Together, these drugs end a pregnancy by blocking the hormone needed to sustain it and by triggering the body to expel the pregnancy.

What to Expect After Taking the Pills

After taking mifepristone and misoprostol, women experience abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding as their body expels the pregnancy. This process usually happens within a few hours, but may take longer for some individuals.

Monitoring your health during this time is crucial. It is important for your well-being to follow up with a healthcare provider if you notice any warning signs of complications.
